Losing motivation happens to the best of us. There are tricks to staying motivated though, many of which involve taking a good hard look at your goals. With a little preparation and solid planning, there is no reason why you cannot stay motivated all the way through whatever you have set out to accomplish.
How are you going to set out to achieve your amazing goal? Well my leadership mavens, lets dig into it:
Start with the Big Picture
What are you trying to accomplish? What is your eventual goal? The clearer your vision, the more likely you are to keep going, even when it all gets tough. Ask yourself what you are trying to achieve, and then visualize yourself achieving it. Visualization is the most important step here. We tend to perform in the way we expect to. So, if you expect to fail, you probably will. By visualizing success, you are more likely to attain success.
Make Sure This is Your Goal
Now that you have gotten the big picture, make sure that this is your goal. At first glance that statement seems ridiculous, why would you make a goal that is not your own? The answer can be easily found when you ask yourself why you want to accomplish that goal. If the word ‘should’ pops up, then you may want to re-evaluate what it is that you are doing. We often set goals because we feel like they are something we are supposed to do, and not because they are something we want to do. You are less likely to stay motivated when you are on the path of *should*.
Make Your Goal Manageable!
Now that you have a goal and are sure it is something you want to do; you might feel a little overwhelmed about how you are going to accomplish this goal. By breaking the goal into smaller pieces, you regain the feeling that you are doing something possible. What is your practical strategy to manage and maintain motivation to accomplish this goal? Celebrate the small successes as you go, this helps keep motivation levels high!
It might be that you do not feel prepared to work on that project because you lack the research supplies. Figure out what you need, and then make sure you have the proper tools to get the job done. It is easier to stay motivated when you have what you need to succeed!
Remember Why You Set the Goal in the First Place
It could be you only need a little reminder, of what your previous motivation was, to find the fresh motivation to keep going.
Motivation is not something you have to lose as you work on achieving your goals or finishing that project. You can keep your motivation, and spirits, high with a little forethought and planning. By keeping track with your goals, setting smaller milestones along the way, you will find that motivation will be on track with you, guiding you all the way through the task at hand until completion.
