The death of any project is lack of motivation. Therefore, it is very important to stay motivated long after your initial enthusiasm for the project has disappeared. It sounds daunting, but it is not as hard as it seems. Especially for all of you leaders out there. Sometimes staying motivated is as easy as setting up a strategy to keep yourself on track.
Picture it down to the last detail. Visualize what you want. Having a clear picture of your goal, makes it more likely that you will be successful in achieving it.
This becomes your primary motivation, so you will want to write this list down. Revisit it as you move along your goal’s timeline.
Do this, and then reward yourself for each step completed. While may seem like common knowledge, it is easy to forget the rewards. Especially if you think of those small goals as being minor. But it is these little victories that will help keep your motivation up as you move along!
Recognize that things change. That plan you made might need a shift to accomplish the goal; or your product might change when you get more information. Realize that it is OK to change your mind, if you revisit these steps when you do. It might be you will have to outline a different set of steps.
It is nearly impossible to succeed when you are trying to do something alone. Having a support system in your life that you can rely on to be your cheerleaders will help you when you are feeling discouraged. Most of all, believe in YOURSELF!
What helps bring motivation back, affirmations? A change of scenery? A talk with your mentor? Listing this in advance means you have a go to you can put into play the moment you feel your energy crash.
Note any changes. This is where being flexible will prove helpful. Even without changes, remembering why you are doing this in the first place is a good practice to turn into habit. It will help you rebuild lost motivation when you need it the most.
Losing motivation does not need to be something to be afraid of. Especially if you have made plans to help keep your motivation at optimal levels as you work. Believe it or not, the best tool in your arsenal lies in being prepared. Work the plan, and the path toward success is yours!
