Without motivation, you are dead in the water. Nothing gets done, and worse, you cannot find the energy to change the situation. The last thing that you want to do is fall into the vortex of broken dreams and lost promise. You change this by simply not getting there in the first place. The trick is to STAY motivated, even when you are not feeling it. How?
Chances are if you are procrastinating, you have stopped working, and motivation is already slipping to dangerous levels. When this happens, you need to give yourself a sharp kick in the butt and keep going – no excuses! You will stay motivated to achieve your goal!
What is going on around you? Is something taking your attention away from your work? Maybe it is time to wear headphones while you work, or to isolate until you get your motivation back.
If you are still having trouble, it might be because you are growing stagnant. This can cause you to burn out! You have been working too long, and you need to clear your head. Stop working, get up, and take a break! Go for a walk, or a drive. If you are stuck in the office, then take your laptop to an empty conference room – anything to create a change and stay motivated!
Nothing stimulates the brain and gets it going again like exercise. You don’t have to commit to an hour long run to get your motivation back. A short jog around the block, or some Yoga will get your endorphins going, and you will be able to jump back into high gear again.
In contrast to the last item on your list, slow down! Close your eyes, breath deeply. Find your center and your calm. Relax and let go of what is going on around you. Be at peace with yourself, and your life.
While this one is easier said than done, the main idea here is to let go of the things that you cannot change, so you can keep looking forward without anything stopping you.
Put on music that inspires you, puts ideas in your head, and a bounce in your step. The genre does not matter. It is how the music makes you feel that counts. If its Motown, Heavy Metal, or even yodeling, use whatever gets you up and back in motion!
It might be that you are losing motivation because you are too overwhelmed by your big goals. Break these goals down, and then drop those bite-sized pieces on a daily to-do list. Be careful not to overload your list with too much. You want to set yourself up for success, not failure. Once you find your To-Do list sweet spot, things will flow super smooth and you will continue to stay motivated.
Maybe it is a mentor you need! Or it could be a biography of someone who inspires you back into action when you are flagging. Give yourself time to meet with your mentor or read on a regular basis. Your mentor will teach you new things, and you will stay motivated!
Most importantly, see yourself completing the project in as much detail as you can imagine. A positive visualization of success tells your subconscious that you can succeed. Sometimes that is all you need to get your energy back to stay motivated.
There are so many more things you can try that are not on this list. The important thing is that we are all different. Something that motivates your neighbor might not be the same thing that motivates you. If it motivates you, use it to keep your goal on track. Only you know what you need to succeed, so go out there and do it!
