How is it that simply imagining a thing, can make it real? No, we are not talking about a new spell from Charmed, we are talking about Creative Visualization, which is more science than magic.
When you are guiding your thoughts onto a certain path in a certain way to ensure success as a leader, that is visualizations. While it might seem a little mystical at first glance, there is some solid science behind it. Studies have shown that it is our attitudes that frequently determine our success. So, if we think that we will fail, we will indeed be very likely to fail.
The opposite also holds true. Not all the time, because there might be other factors that have to do with your success that can be out of your control – like a lack of knowledge when you begin, or a lack of resources to see the project through to completion. But what IS proven, is the importance of a positive mindset. Visualization takes that positivity to the next level and allows you to see your success.
Start With a Goal
If you are not sure where you are going, how can you expect to reach your destination? This is where you start to picture what you want or hope to accomplish exactly. That is your big picture goal. So do not worry about the details yet. Right now, you are figuring out your direction. Create a vision board if you need a visual aid!
Here is where you get deep into what it is you want to do. Once you have your big picture goal, you can work out the smaller components that make it up. Imagine this goal in the most minute details until you have a clear understanding of what you need to do, to get where you are trying to go!
Expect the Unexpected
Now picture the obstacles you will likely come up against that want to stop you in your tracks. How will you handle them? This is where you plan for every contingency. Create backup plans.
Add in Practical Application
Pretty much, you want to practice. Not just in your head, but in the real world as well. That means rehearsing that speech in front of your family, or a mirror, before giving it in front of that big crowd. Take your visualizations and put it to the test. Then go back and revisit – did it pass or fail the test? Do you need to make any adjustments? Repeat this as much as necessary
See the Success
When visualizing, perhaps the most important thing to see in your minds eye is your success. Picture your goal to completion, with ALL of the steps, including that happy ending, when everything has gone exactly right.
By using visualization, you are giving yourself an important edge. This edge becomes motivation. When you are sure of your success, you cannot help but be excited about what you are doing. What is amazing, is that using that motivation will create a stronger mental image, creating a cycle of success that is unbeatable.
